Dear friend of the animals, Pet Retail Ban - bunny, cat, dogAs a passionate and caring supporter of animals, I want to share with you the exciting news from yesterday’s San Diego City Council meeting:
In a unanimous vote, the San Diego City Council voted to pass an ordinance that bans the sale of puppies/dogs, kittens/cats and rabbits from retail pet stores in San Diego.
You can read the coverage in today’s San Diego Union Tribune here»Why is this so important?  This ban targets puppy mills and other large-scale, commercial  breeders.  This ban does not target or impact responsible, hobby breeders.  As the nation’s pet friendliest city and a community who passionately supports animals, I’m proud to say that we join 32 other communities throughout North America to impose a ban such as this one.  The other extraordinary thing is that this ordinance is the culmination of work from several animal welfare groups—groups that chose to work together for the common good of animals in our community.  You can read more about the ordinance in our press release located here».While this San Diego citywide ordinance is a giant step forward for the voiceless animals we care so deeply about, this is just the beginning of our mission to help and represent animals.  We’ll keep you informed as we continue to work on issues that impact animals and animal welfare.Lastly, but perhaps most important, I want to thank you for your support and ongoing commitment to the animals and to the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.  As I’ve said so many times recently, we are working together to make San Diego the best place to own an animal…or to be one.  This would not be possible without a community that takes our position as “pet friendliest city” so seriously to heart.
Warmest regards,
